PostSubject: Meet my New Arrival    Fri Oct 28, 2016 5:03 pm

I received a phone call today from our local primary School Lostock CoE about a hedgehog that was stuck in the perimeter fencing - one of the children had seen it stuck in the fencing and went to fetch help.

The poor little thing had managed to get stuck in the fencing but it was the plastic round its body that had stopped it from getting through as this is only a baby and not an adult. I was able to pop the hoggie back through the fence rather than pull it through and once free I snipped the plastic can holder and immediately saw the wounds.

Luckily my vet is just up the road so we went straight there and Patrick and the team took the hedgehog through to the treatment room to begin an initial assessment.

I gave the go ahead to treat as although she is not out of the woods, there is a strong possibility that she will survive this as long as her wounds are kept on top of and she has a course of medication so her journey to recovery is now beginning fingers crossed.
I cannot thank Patrick and the Team enough for dealing with a mad crazy lady running through the door shouting for help, cleaning her up and giving her fluids, pain relief, anti biotics, cleaning the wound and giving me her care plan for the weekend - she will be going back on Monday for her wounds to be checked over.

After reading so many stories where children have been so cruel to hedgehogs I cannot begin to say how proud I am of the pupils at Lostock Primary School for seeking help for this little lady. I have attended their summer fete and recently visited to talk to the children about our wild hedgehogs and it just goes to show that it works - it has been a rubbish week for me personally losing two of my African Pygmy Hedgehogs but this has been my ray of sunshine moment this week.

I have rung the school to give them an initial update on her and all being well, I shall be able to give them good news when they return from their half term break.

For now, she is settled in a zoozone, has heat and fleece to snuggle into, she has moved and has been out for a biscuit or two. She will be given some fluids later and have recovery diet to just give her a boost and no doubt she will feel better when the hitch hikers she was laden with drop off and die!

First time I have seem quite so many under the microscope as well, horrible little mites - yuck!

Keep your fingers crossed for her over the weekend and hope to be able to give her a lovely name on Monday x

Very possible as those gardens are in hoggie wandering distance - she has been out and has had a nibble so rather than upset her after her ordeal, I am going to see how much she eats overnight, have popped her some fresh chicken in as well - but she is pottering about which is bloody fantastic given her wounds - Irene has given me the name of a gel that works well so shall see how we go with the menuka honey treatment and talk to Patrick about it on Monday.

Bless her - so proud of the children at the school as well x

Well she is still with us this morning, cleared her dish of food which did include some freshly cooked chicken and has drunk her water - all are positive signs. Now I need to keep on top of her wounds, shall be seeing to them shortly, full clean of her cage, fresh paper and fresh fleece to make sure the hitch hikers are got rid of on a daily basis.

Isn't it nice to read about children in this light for a change, bless them for raising the alarm and you for helping her hunni? I hate mites too Nellie love, any parasite actually. I take great delight in destroying them. That wound looks really nasty and I am so glad she is now in your care and she has made it through the night. Please send regular updates. Very Happy

Hugs

Me too, anything with no legs and more than four legs isn't necessary!

Ha ha Nellie love, that made me laugh. I must admit that being a buggy lover I like things with more than four legs but I hate any parasites and I don't see the need for them. How is the little one today?

Well, my little one is gaining weight nicely - shall weigh her later and get an exact weight gain - have just got off the phone with Patrick and he is happy to wait until tomorrow so that he can just give her a little gas and check the wounds - they are healing up lovely - this I know because as soon as she sees the cotton wood bud coming at her she balls up and stays tight but I can see they are healing really well - giving her oral meds is again a nightmare, refuses to open her mushty and it is a battle of wills! Nellie wins in the end!

She is eating really well, still has recovery diet once a day and cat meat and biscuits fresh twice daily and also a little fresh chicken - big believer that a good diet helps the healing process.

Chuffed Chuffed and even more chuffed!

Look at me - taken yesterday at her Vet's appointment - no treatment but booked in next week where she will be given a little gas to check everything - with her doing so well Patrick didn't want to do too much yesterday and the course of treatment is doing so well - totally different girl.

She has been called Nellie - not after me - I follow a lady on FB - Nellie Doodles - she used her own greyhound Nellie as her inspiration behind her wonderful greyhound doodles and I have a collection of prints - they make me smile and as my tribute to a wonderful greyhound who brought a lot of joy into people's lives, it seems fitting that my little fighter had a name that meant something special xx

I think that is really sweet Nellie love, I think it is so nice when someone is named after an inspiration. Lovely little hoggy, is he cuddly?

Cannot really cuddle them Jo - she has to return to the wild where she came from so apart from treating her it has to be a hands off approach x

Somebody is getting to be a cheeky monkey! Daily cleaning out and she legs it! Mental note to remember Nellie has speedy boots on! Wouldn't mind but she then toileted under her clean fleece and refused to use it - wanted a clean one! Diva!!!

Good news - Nellie has been signed off by Patrick today - her wounds have healed really well, just a little to go under her armpits but nothing that required he needed to be given a little gas to assess further. Anti biotics have now stopped - you can still see where the ring pull has nipped her in at the sides but other that that, she is pretty damn good even if one of the naughtiest hoggies I have looked after - the gratitude she gave Patrick was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE poop!

I knew she would be! I know I've already said this, but it's so amazing how quickly they heal compared to us. Nellie is no exception. To look back at those first photos and to see her how she is today is unbelievable! Very Happy x x
