PostSubject: Press Article from 27th January 2012   Mon Feb 18, 2013 3:01 pm

During my searches on the internet to find snippets for the forum - I came across this story from 2012 - now, I can see several obvious things that in my opinion are wrong - it scared me that the owners seemed to be so ignorant and oblivious to what they have said - what can you see that might by wrong and why?

Prickly presents

27 Jan 2012

Ann Jardine, 46, doesn't mind her pets hogging her attention...

radling two small shaking bundles in my hand it was love at first sight.

'They're so cute Mum' my daughter Lucie Ann, 14, cooed.

'Cute and prickly' I laughed.

In my hand were tiny African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They looked adorable with peachy white skin and soft bristles.
'I think we should call one Sonic!' Lucie Ann smirked.

We had come to the wild life centre near our home in Chester to have a look for a new pet. Suddenly getting a hedgehog seemed obvious.

I'd always loved seeing wild hedgehogs in my back garden but I knew you couldn't raise them domestically because of their fleas. They were the ideal compromise and it was refreshing to have a small pet. These could live happily in a house and they're easy to look after too. They eat cat food and sleep most of the day.

'Let's get them.'

We named one Sonic and the other Amy and back at our home they soon settled in.

Once they trust you they retract their bristles so I can have a little cuddle without getting hurt. Amy did this in the first week, but it took Sonic a bit longer, he's your typical grumpy, standoffish bloke. At first I was worried they wouldn't be safe around my dog, especially when he picked Amy up in his mouth like a play toy.

I was chasing him around the house trying to save Amy but I needn't have worried. She spiked him and he hasn't tried since.
Now they come out in the evenings to run around in the kitchen and play in their wheel.

We soon realised running wasn't the only thing they got up to though. African Pygmy Hedgehogs are known for their quick breeding. Sonic is so insatiable I've started keeping him in a separate cage.

Before we knew it we didn't just have Sonic and Amy, but a whole litter. And when the baby hogs were born they started mating with their parents!

Now I've decided to become a breeder because hedgehogs as pets is becoming quite popular.

The local pet shop is always calling me to ask when the next lot of babies are due, people can't get enough of them.

It's sad saying goodbye to the little ones but I'm just happy other people are enjoying them as much as I do.

I'm happy for my little pets to hog my attention any day!

And, impulse purchase and not being able to raise wild hedgehogs due to their fleas!!!

Nothing to do with the fact that a) illegal to keep a wild hedgehog as a pet unless there is a reason why it cannot be released back into the wild b) not all hedgehogs have fleas and they are hedgehog specific

Anybody who comes across this "breeder" would be well advised to give a very wide berth!

OMG! Not to mention, why are they shaking? They mustn't be very happy and I do believe the correct word is quills not 'bristles'. They're not a hairbrush. I'm fuming. She should be reported for mistreating animals. She's obviously going to use them as baby machines and like you said all that inbreeding. Also these poor things will not be registered. I am completely disgusted by this. She says it all like it's normal for this to happen. Like she's achieved something. Oooooh, I'm fuming! x x

Lou - I have tried this with our local paper when they printed an article on APH - sadly the damage has been done and in the press world this is too old a story to warrant printing a reply - when my reply was printed in the local paper, it was a very small piece as apposed to the original whacking great piece - you would have missed it x
