It's often said that curiosity killed the cat, but as these photos show, inquisitiveness can nearly be the death of any animal.

From a ladder to a drain, to a telephone pole, it seems that these creatures are willing to put their head anywhere possible, although getting their body out can be an all together more tricky matter.

One poor cow found herself stuck for five days below street level after falling into a drain in Kaysville, Utah.

She was only found after a local heard strange noises and a whole crew had to be called in to dig up part of the street, while a tractor eventually pulled the cow out.

While an unlucky baby racoon was stuck head-first in the centre of a large iron sewer grate after trying to climb out of a storm drain.

Little help please: Members of the public called for help after spotting a cow with her head stuck in a ladder. They guided the animal into a holding pen, where they were eventually able to gently remove the ladder which was wedged firmly on her neck

Pipe dream: It was definitely more of a nightmare for two-year-old stray dog Smokey. The hapless young dog found himself with his head firmly stuck inside the long tube of an old oil-burning pot. It's thought he had been chasing a mouse when the pesky rodent led him straight into an abandoned device

Story times: When a baby raccoon got caught in a Dearborn Heights sewer grate, city workers sprang into action to save the animal. It was stuck head-first in the centre of a large iron sewer grate after climbing out of a storm drain. Luckily, this animal's tale had a happy ending

Feeling thirsty? Brett, a four month-old puppy gets into a fight with an empty Diet Pepsi box. The German Shepherd/Labrador cross frequently stole a quick nip of the cola from his owners' open cans. They watched with hilarity as the opportunist mutt unsuccessfully fighting off the branded cardboard box for a full 10 minutes

Prickly situation: This hedgehog was rescued after getting caught in a tree trunk. A passerby spotted the stuck hedgehog and took it to a clinic in Nottingham, where it took a vet 45 minutes to cut him free

Could be here for a while: A dog learned why curiosity killed the cat when its head got stuck between the steel bars of a factory gate in China. The lucky dog has canine lives, it seems, surviving the ordeal when fireman staged a dramatic rescue
