PostSubject: Legalities   Mon Feb 04, 2013 3:21 pm

It's important to note that whilst there are currently no restrictions I am aware of in Europe to keeping these, there are heavy restrictions in Europe to bringing them into some countries.

In the UK you can not transport an African Pygmy Hedgehog from mainland Europe without going through rabies quarantine as they are a mammal, and technically can carry rabies. Bringing them into the country without this quarantine is a very serious offense.

In some states in the USA it is illegal to own a hedgehog as a pet, including the African Pygmy Hedgehog. Check with your local government first, but at the time of writing it was illegal to keep a hedgehog as a pet in California, Georgia, Hawaii, Douglas County Nebraska and New York City. Furthermore some states require permits to keep a hedgehog in the state; others require permits to move hedgehogs in and out of the state.

In Australia all hedgehogs are classified as exotic pets and are illegal to import into the country.

Nope - it is illegal - they can carry Rabies and are subject to six months quarantine - if found with an imported hog and no proof of quarantine they can be taken from you and destroyed x

I wonder if some folks do actually bring them in though and quarantine them? Doing everything above board. I can't imagine having to let one of your babies go somewhere though and have to be 'held' for 6 months. Even being the person who buys the hoggie... Mind you I suppose that they will just see it as them buying a 6-7 month old youngster. It would have to be somebody who was just 'driven' to buy specifically for a colour and maybe breeding purposes I expect.

What do you reckon?

I honestly don't think that people are aware that it is illegal to bring them in from anywhere in the world - if they were to go into quarantine in this country the cost could run into a large bill in the 1000's - the vet has to come on a weekly visit to check their health and also take blood samples to run against the rabies virus - six months in quarantine is a long time not to be handled and just poked and prodded around - then, when you get them, especially a female, the aim would get them to breed as they would be around the seven and a half month age - no time for socialising them etc etc

When people visit the various EU shows they can purchase any reptile/animal and are supposed to declare them when they arrive back in the UK at the port but many don't - there was one trip where the animals were kept in the hold under the bus but put right next to the engine - they all died.
