Young children are not ideal caregivers for hedgehogs. Children tend to be somewhat loud and excitable unless taught specifically how to act around a shy pet.

This is training that an adult will need to provide (in addition to constant supervision.) Also, most of us will get poked a time or two handing a hedgehog – and young children will be even more likely due to less manual dexterity.

This can lead some to become afraid of holding a hedgehog. This is an area where your guidance and supervision will be very important.

Finally, Hedgehogs, as noted above, are nocturnal by nature and may be sleeping when one’s young child is active. If awakened, hedgehogs can be quite grumpy.

Older children can provide care for a hedgehog with adult supervision. Hedgehogs can be more complicated to care for compared to other pets due to their need for controlled temperature within their environment. This is care an adult must supervise (in addition to regular grooming, care, and feeding.)

i always get demi (4 years old) to hold the babies with me there obviously....as i feel if they are used to being a little man handled, then they wont be so shy and nervous with other kids...

whether thats the right thing or not, it seems to work.

my friend does agility with his dogs and he hasnt no kids....so when his dog was a little older it would snap when he saw kids because he was afraid of them...
